Content editing for academic papers goes beyond structure and organization. Academic writing is held to a higher standard by both institutions and professional journals. Whether you’re writing ere are a few of the things I review.
- is the main point upfront and center?
- is there a solid “hook” for the reader?
- how much jargon is there? is it understood or defined?
- do any areas need author clarification?
- is each sentence adding something new or has it been addressed already?
- does the paper flow? is it logical?
- are certain details necessary? the author needs to decide
- too many acronyms? are they in the right place? or the wrong place?
- are there related concepts scattered throughout that need to be tied together?
- are there areas of ambiguity?
- are there concepts that need clarification?
- are there areas that need to be condensed?
- how about word repetition?
- are there nouns that should be verbs? (selection vs. select)
- have all technical terms been defined?
- what is the overall tone of the piece and is it appropriate for the audience? active vs. passive voice?
- is there a strong finish? does it tie back to the beginning?
- if it’s a scientific manuscript, is the content in the right place: abstract, tables/figures, introduction, methods, results, discussion?

How does this work?
Share your problem. Tell me what needs to be done and what you’ve done already. Provide all the necessary details and instructions. We’ll agree on a price and a deadline.
Some decisions you may have to make are:
- Do you need track changes on? I will always have a copy of all the revisions I make, if you want it.
- Do you want the final result sent to you in Word or Pages?
- What is your deadline? Remember to leave time for your one free revision. It’s not a good idea to give me a deadline that is the day before the paper is due. Leave time to review the changes for yourself. It will have your name on it!
Return the contract. After we’ve talked and I have a clear understanding of what you need, I’ll write down the agreed-upon details and send you the contract which will include the specific service, the timeline, and the cost.
Share your material. I’ll give my contact information. You’ll have to share your material in the agreed upon time frame we’ve discussed. Then I’ll perform my magic and you’ll end up with a
Wow the world. Once it’s all done you’ll have a meticulously edited paper that fits your criteria and has the best chance of achieving the grade you desire.
I cannot guarantee you the grade you want for your project for two reasons:
- I have no control over what happens to the content once it leaves my desk. It’s up to you to make the recommended changes or not.
- Content review is subjective by it’s very nature. I cannot rewrite what you provide to me, even though I will make recommendations. If you didn’t pull the strongest references or garner the best information from an article in the first place, no amount of error-free or on-target writing is going to get you an A.
