When it comes to study time, it’s easy to get distracted. To get interrupted. To forget why you’re doing what you’re doing! But there is hope! Here are some tips for focusing on your focus.
Develop a study ritual
Take 5 minutes prior to your study time to clear your desk, organize your supplies, put on the noise-cancelling headphones, closing the office door, and creating your to-do list. If you do the same thing every time, this little ritual will prep your brain for studying.
Let the value flow
When it comes to focus, learn to think of studying in terms of outcomes will help. I enjoy marking things off my to-do list as much as the next person, but the ultimate focus should always on the value of what is being accomplished. For example, I’m memorizing the top five diabetes drugs because one day it’s going to be me and my diabetic patient all alone in a room and she’s going to want answers! Remember the why of what you’re learning.
Don’t multitask
Resist the urge to read your textbook while vacuuming or take your online quiz while in the bathtub. Multitasking isn’t all it’s hyped up to be.
Focus on one thing at a time
Pick one task, one goal and work on that only. If you get stuck, then take a break and move on to the next task. Otherwise, stay the course.
Limit distractions
You know you. Block whatever needs blocking. All those distracting websites and apps. Your phone and your pager. That left over bowl of Halloween candy. Block it all!
Reduce open work
When you’re ready to move on to the next task, close things down before moving on. Close down the open windows on your computer. Close your textbook and put it away.
Deal with interruptions
It’s bound to happen . . . the dreaded interruption. Find the pattern that works best for you in handling these issues. Establish a code word with your family so they know you’re busy, then reset your Pomodora timer and get back at it.
Reduce interruptions
Plan ahead to have your significant other on call for the kids. Find different places to work from if one isn’t working for you. Allocate time for other activities prior to studying, so that you can confidently know it will be taken of while you’re studying.
