Top 5 Books You Really Should Own if You’re a Family Nurse Practitioner Student

books for FNP students

Family Nurse Practitioner students unite! Becoming a family nurse practitioner is a blast, but it’s not easy. Here are some of the absolute best books and resources that will take you through NP school and continue supporting you right into practice.

Whether you like it or not, nurse practitioners have to know the business and legal side of practice and there’s only one book out there that has everything in one place.

Nurse Practitioner’s Business Practice and Legal Guide by Carolyn Buppert.

Buppert is an attorney but also a nurse practitioner. Currently this book is in it’s 6th edition. Her website and YouTube channel have lots of great info for nurse practitioners, be sure to visit both!

Family Practice Guidelines

This text is a staple for family nurse practitioners. I love the way it’s laid out, from the table of contents to the index. I can always find exactly what I’m looking for. HUGE BONUS for me are the patient teaching pages at the back of the book. Very useful for practice but especially if you’re a student . . . makes putting together those case studies so much easier!

Pocket Primary Care

I found this book invaluable throughout NP school! I highly recommend it. I took it to every single clinic rotation.

Sure, it is concise and accurate, but most of all it is so completely thorough that I always felt like using it was better than a google search. Which is a good thing because most clinical days I didn’t have access to the internet. So when I had to look up the Ottawa ankle rules or latest diabetes medications, Pocket Primary Care had me covered.

This one wins the award for MVCB: most valuable clinic book!

Clinical Case Studies for the Family Nurse Practitioner

I know! Another case study book? Seriously? Yes and here’s why. This one is practical. I’m very methodical when it comes to learning.

I need things laid out from point A to point B. I like it when information is on target and not surrounded with a lot of extra fluff. I like clear and to the point. And Clinical Case Studies for the Family Nurse Practitioner fits the bill.

Fitzpatrick’s Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology

You’re defiantly going to need this one! It’s a classic. In it’s 8th edition, this text is by far the most thorough as far as conditions and pictures go.

It is kind of portable (if that’s a thing) but what I like the best is that I found myself flipping through it just to look at the pictures. You’ll need this one in your office when you start practicing! Well worth it!
